At Thanksgiving, we’d like to give an update on things here at MCA. First of all, we are most thankful for each of you. Thankful for your prayers, devotion, and financial support.
We are delighted to report progress on our effort to pay faculty more fairly. A $150,000 grant to the Fairness Fund last year allowed us to raise the starting faculty salary by $2,000 this year. This raise compounds with seniority. The average MCA increase was $3,470. We are now at 68% of the New York public school starting salary. 75% is considered a best practice. Our plans are to move closer to that standard with a $3,000 raise as soon as we can.
We fulfilled a critical technology objective with this year’s implementation of a new, best of breed school software platform. The system allows for secure login by staff and families, plus new messaging, and reporting functionality. Also new is a related website giving MCA a fresh new look in the market place. As you know the transient nature of our neighborhood can be a challenge. When things get better, many of our families move out of the city where they can afford a house with a yard. This year we had 27 registered children who left during the summer after we set our budget and staff. Each of them left praising the fine education their children received and with the prayer to find a similar school in their new communities.
The resulting reduced tuition income and smaller classes increases our funding requirements. Netting the grant for faculty salaries and the related additional deficit, we need to raise $678,000 this year. This is $20,000 more than we raised for last year’s expenses.
We are doing our part to keep administrative expenses at a minimum. Also we have moved our admissions process up in the calendar integrating financial aid in the process.
Please remember that MCA is God’s work for His children. We take at risk children and offer them an opportunity for success. One metric is the college preparatory rate. MCA’s college preparatory rate approaches 100%, compared with 33% in the New York public system, at 30% of the cost.
